Richmond Training & Consulting - June Newsletter 2007
Offering commentary on topical people related issues that may affect your business in Jersey.
This quarter, the topic is WORK/LIFE BALANCE
A conservative government would look for flexible working for ALL parents
A conservative government would extend the right to request flexible working to all parents, party leader David Cameron said today.
While he didn’t go so far as to pledge the right to request for all workers, he did say that he wouldn’t rule it out. “Legislation isn’t the only answer,” Cameron said. “We need to encourage best practice and encourage a great culture shift. Legislation is one of the tools at our disposal.”
Cherie Blair speaks out on talent retention
Flexible working does not hinder career progression and should be seen as a positive way of retaining talent, according to Cherie Booth.
The barrister and outgoing prime minister’s wife was speaking at the launch of Hours to Suit, a report by work-life balance campaigners Working Families. Booth said flexible hours did not have to be incompatible with business.
“Talent is precious and it’s going to be more precious in countries like ours with a falling birth rate,” Booth said. “Young people today are more than aware they have got lives outside work. They have other interests and want to know if employers are interested in developing them as an all-round person and not just as a machine in a business.”
Work/Life balance – a step in the right direction
Richmond Training & Consulting are running a series of ‘Executive Dream’ events in Jersey. Primarily aimed at busy office-bound executives, these events allow for individuals or teams to meet on the Island for 24 to 48 hours, combining luxury living with team sporting or fun activities, within an overall theme of personal development.
The events are proving popular for organisations with UK offices, who want to bring individuals or teams to Jersey as part of a training/team building or reward strategy. Equally, there is no reason why locally businesses should not reward their teams on their own doorstep, combining team building/personal effectiveness workshops and fun/sport activities as part of a luxury break.
